What Is Answer Engine Optimization?

How local businesses get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews — and why ranking alone no longer covers it.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and AI systems can lift a direct, accurate answer from it and attribute that answer to you. Traditional SEO competes for a ranked link that earns a click. AEO competes to be the answer itself — in featured snippets, voice results, and AI-generated summaries.

Why this became urgent

Search used to be a referral system. You ranked, someone clicked, they landed on your site. That chain is breaking at the second link.

Roughly 80% of Google searches now end without a click. In AI-assisted search experiences that figure climbs past 90%. The searcher still gets their answer; they just get it before reaching anyone's website. For a local business, the question stops being “how do I get the click” and becomes “when the answer is delivered without a click, is it my information being delivered?”

SEO, AEO, and GEO are layers, not alternatives

These three terms get sold as competing services. They are sequential.

LayerGoalSurfaceMeasured by
SEOGet discoveredOrganic results, MapsRankings, clicks
AEOBecome the answerSnippets, voice, AI OverviewsImpressions, snippet capture
GEOGet recommendedChatGPT, Claude, PerplexityCitations, brand mentions

The dependency runs one direction. Approximately 76% of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in the top ten organic results. A site with no organic visibility has almost no path into an AI answer. This is the most common misunderstanding we encounter: businesses want to skip to AI visibility without the ranking underneath it, and there is no such shortcut.

What AI systems actually select for

Answer engines are not ranking pages — they are assembling a response and looking for material they can safely quote. That changes what “good content” means.

Extractability

A claim buried in the fourth paragraph of a section titled “Our Approach” is hard to lift cleanly. The same claim stated in a sentence directly under a heading phrased as the question is easy. This is why AEO content reads differently — headings that mirror real queries, answers delivered in the first sentence, elaboration afterward.

Specificity

“Competitive pricing” is unciteable. “$99 per month, including hosting and three edits” is citeable. Concrete numbers, dates, and named places survive the trip into an AI answer; marketing adjectives do not. If you want to be quoted, publish things that can be quoted.

Corroboration

AI systems cross-check. A fact stated on your website and nowhere else is weaker than one echoed by your Google Business Profile, a chamber listing, and a local news mention. This is why consistent name, address, and phone details across the web matter more for AEO than they ever did for SEO.

Machine-readable structure

Schema markup tells a parser what kind of thing your page describes — a business, a service, an FAQ, an event, a price. It is not a ranking bonus so much as a translation layer, and without it a machine has to infer everything from prose.

A practical AEO checklist

  1. Rank first. Fix indexing, speed, and mobile issues before anything else. Nothing downstream works without this.
  2. Phrase headings as questions people actually ask. “How much does a plumber cost in Grand Junction?” beats “Our Pricing.”
  3. Answer in the first 40 words under each heading. Then expand. Snippet extraction rarely reaches past the opening.
  4. Publish real numbers. Prices, response times, years in business, service radius, capacity. Vagueness is the enemy of citation.
  5. Add structured data. LocalBusiness for the organization, Service for what you sell, FAQPage for question blocks, Event for anything scheduled.
  6. Make your NAP identical everywhere. Website, Google Business Profile, directories, social. Discrepancies dilute confidence.
  7. Publish an llms.txt. A plain summary of who you are, what you charge, and which pages matter. Cheap, and it forces clarity.
  8. Earn third-party mentions. Local news, chambers, associations, established directories. Corroboration is a ranking factor for answers even when it is not one for links.
  9. Keep it current. Stale dates and dead offers get filtered. Dated content that is actually maintained outperforms undated content that is not.
  10. Check whether AI crawlers can reach you. Aggressive bot blocking at the CDN level quietly removes you from consideration entirely.

How to tell whether it is working

AEO measurement is genuinely immature and anyone claiming precision is overselling. Three things are worth tracking:

  • Impressions rising while clicks stay flat. Counterintuitively, this is often AEO working — you are being shown and read without being clicked.
  • Manual spot checks. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google the questions your customers ask. Record who gets named. Repeat monthly.
  • Referral traffic from AI domains. Small but growing, and unambiguous when it appears in analytics.

What this looks like for a local business

A Grand Junction HVAC company does not need a content marketing department. It needs its service area stated plainly, its emergency response time published as a number, its pricing model explained without euphemism, its profile consistent across a dozen listings, and its twenty most-asked questions answered on the site in the words customers actually use.

That is most of AEO for a small business. The sophisticated parts matter at scale; the unglamorous parts matter first.

Answer Engine Optimization: Common Questions

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search and AI systems can lift a direct, accurate answer from it and attribute that answer to you. Where traditional SEO optimizes for a ranked link that earns a click, AEO optimizes for being the answer itself — in featured snippets, voice results, and AI-generated summaries.

What is the difference between AEO, SEO, and GEO?

SEO gets you discovered and ranked. AEO makes you the direct answer in snippets, voice results, and AI summaries. GEO — generative engine optimization — is about being cited and recommended by generative AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. They are layered rather than separate: roughly 76% of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in the top ten organic results, so SEO remains the foundation the other two are built on.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO depends on SEO. AI systems overwhelmingly select sources from pages that already rank well, so a site with no organic visibility has very little chance of being cited. AEO is a layer applied to content that is already discoverable, not a substitute for making it discoverable.

How do I get my business mentioned in ChatGPT?

Four things do most of the work: publish specific, factual content that answers real questions directly; mark it up with structured data so machines can parse the entities involved; keep your name, address, and phone number consistent everywhere they appear; and earn mentions on third-party sites AI systems already trust, such as local news, chambers of commerce, and established directories. AI systems assemble answers from multiple corroborating sources, so consistency across the web matters more than polish on any single page.

Why do zero-click searches matter for my business?

Around 80% of Google searches already end without a click, and AI-assisted search experiences push that past 90%. If your strategy only counts sessions, most of your visibility is now invisible to you. The practical response is to optimize for being the cited answer — brand impression, phone call, or direct visit — rather than only for the click.

What is llms.txt and do I need one?

llms.txt is a plain-text file at the root of your site that gives AI systems a concise, structured summary of what your business does, what you charge, and which pages matter. It is an emerging convention rather than a ratified standard, and no AI provider guarantees they read it. It costs very little to publish, and it forces you to state your key facts plainly — which is useful regardless of who reads it.

How long does AEO take to show results?

Structured data and content changes can be picked up within days to weeks by traditional crawlers. AI systems vary far more: some retrieve live results at query time and reflect changes quickly, while others rely on training data that lags by months. Expect snippet and voice improvements first, and treat AI citation as a slower compounding effect.
